Vegan Film Director James Cameron Launches Exciting New Pea-Venture

Oscar-winning film director James Cameron is giving peas a chance: together with wife Suzy Amis Cameron, they are launching Verdient Food Inc., a new venture that will become North America’s largest pea protein fractionation facility.

We are working with Saskatchewan farmers through the Verdient Foods processing facility and the Food Centre to integrate food production with new value-added products,” Cameron said in a statement. This new venture taps into another potential blockbuster – this time outside the movie business – the vegan food chain. Based in Cameron’s Canadian homeland, the facility will not only process the peas but also develop organic, plant-based foods for global food producers. By addressing the increasing global demand for plant-based foods, the Camerons are closing in on their “mission to bring healthy food to all.”

Pea protein has become a sought-after ingredient, owing to its versatility: its used in various plant-based foods, including nondairy milk, yogurt, and various protein powders. It’s also the key ingredient in Beyond Meat’s Beyond Burgers, whose consistency is so meat-like, the company are working to have them merchandised alongside meat counters in supermarkets!

James became vegan around four years ago, after watching the popular documentary “Forks Over Knives.” A long-time advocate for the environment, he made the switch in order to lower his carbon footprint and help save the planet. As a bonus, he also found that eating plant-based drastically improved his health.

This new venture complements their other health-focused efforts: they were the drivers of the plant-based school in the U.S., Los Angeles’s MUSE School. He is also the producer behind an upcoming documentary on vegan athletes called “The Game Changers.”

Its even been speculated that characters in the four Avatar sequels will be vegan. With filming for the Avatar 2 finally on its way, we’ll all have to wait and seen how the environmentally aware storylines will unfold.
